Broke: The Racial Consequences of Underfunding Public Universities
By John B. King Jr.
Public universities are in trouble. They are underfunded, overcrowded, and struggling to keep up with the rising costs of education. This is having a devastating impact on students, particularly students of color. In his new book, Broke, John B. King Jr. argues that the underfunding of public universities is a racial issue. He shows how the lack of investment in these institutions is perpetuating inequality and making it harder for students of color to succeed.
King begins by providing a brief history of public universities in America. He shows how these institutions were founded with the mission of providing affordable, high-quality education to all students, regardless of their race or background. However, over time, public universities have become increasingly underfunded. This has led to a decline in the quality of education and a rise in tuition costs.

The impact of underfunding on students of color is particularly severe. These students are more likely to come from low-income families and to attend underfunded schools. They are also more likely to need financial aid and to have to work while they are in school. As a result, they are less likely to graduate and more likely to accumulate debt.
King argues that the underfunding of public universities is a form of structural racism. He shows how this underfunding is perpetuating inequality and making it harder for students of color to succeed. He calls for a renewed investment in public universities and for policies that will make it easier for students of color to attend and succeed in college.
Broke is a powerful and timely book. It is a must-read for anyone who cares about the future of higher education in America. King's analysis is clear and concise, and his argument is compelling. Broke is essential reading for policymakers, educators, and anyone who wants to understand the challenges facing public universities today.
