Early Life and Education

Ben Nighthorse Campbell was born on April 13, 1933, on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Montana. He was the son of Charles Nighthorse Campbell, a Northern Cheyenne chief, and Mary Weasel Bear, a Crow woman. Campbell grew up in a traditional Native American home and learned the Cheyenne language and culture. He attended the Bureau of Indian Affairs school on the reservation and later graduated from high school in Lame Deer, Montana.

After graduating from high school, Campbell joined the United States Army. He served in the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his bravery. After his military service, Campbell attended the University of Colorado Boulder, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. He later earned a master's degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado.

Political Career

Campbell began his political career in the 1970s. He was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 1974 and served until 1978. He was then elected to the Colorado State Senate, where he served from 1978 to 1992. In 1992, Campbell was elected to the United States Senate. He was the first Native American to serve in the Senate since Charles Curtis in the 1920s.
